The teams head out to the pitch

Today’s League Cup Final vs Bayside Girls took place at Riverside in Dundee and it proved to be an exciting, but in the end, disappointing day for Monifieth Reds U13. Having won every one of their matches so far this year it was with great confidence that they prepared themselves for today’s match however it was Bayside Girls whose passing game and pressure play up front that enabled them to win the day and lift the trophy with a fine 5-2 victory. Defeat for the Reds appeared to be an unlikely outcome at the beginning of the match when they looked to be the team on top. They nearly took the lead when Aimee Robertson headed against the post from a flighted corner however it wasn’t long before the deadlock was broken when Aimee did find the net with a smashing drive from the edge of the box that flew past the more than competent Bayside keeper. Bayside however were undaunted by this and ably led by their diminutive but very able striker they began to pressure the Reds’ defence with AJ Meach being called in to action to keep her team in front, with one particularly brilliant tip past the post.

The Reds kept pressing however and a second goal came their way when Katie Shaw was quickest to a loose ball that had been spilled by the keeper after a shot from Kacey McCabe to knock the ball in to the net. 2-0 to the Reds! This lead was halved almost immediately though when the Bayside striker jumped on to a slip in the Reds’ midfield to run straight through on goal and stick the ball in the corner to get her team back in the game. Both teams pushed and prodded to get another goal however at half-time the score remained 2-1 to the Reds.

The second half saw Bayside get more and more in to the match as their passing game became more evident. Their striker was showing how to play that role in a team very well with movement and passing that continually brought in her team-mates. This play led to an equaliser when great passing and movement  from Bayside’s  front players presented their striker with another chance and she hit a lovely finish in to the corner with the outside of her foot. The Reds were now in a game and they kept pressing however it was Bayside who extended their lead when their main striker bagged a third and then set up one of her team-mates to fire the ball home for a fourth goal. The scoring was brought to an end when one of the Reds’ players couldn’t get out of the way of the ball in the box and cannoned it in to her own net!

The final whistle sounded to the delight of Bayside Girls and their traveling supporters as they celebrated a 5-2 victory. The Reds were understandably disappointed and dejected after having had such a good season up until now only to face their first defeat in a Cup Final.

Congratulations to Bayside Girls from all at Monifieth Ladies FC for winning the cup and to our girls for their performance today and their performances so far this season. You are a credit to our club and will only learn from today’s experience.

On to the next match…
