Sometimes football is the easiest game in the world.
And so it proved today as Monifieth travelled to Montrose to play the most northern team in the league. Travelling with the barest 11 players and having to cope with a new formation the players were outstanding.
Playing with 3 at the back Katie R Alice and Iona were never really troubled by the pace of the Montrose forwards.
Newly returned Bobby playing as the midfielder just in front the the defence allowed the superb midfield of Jessica Cally Libby and Eilidh to totally dominate the game. This left Stephanie and Katie M free to torment the Montrose defence.
Straight from the kick off Cally won a challenge in midfield and immediately played the ball out to the wing for Eilidh who took a touch and hit a delightful cross of the onrushing Katie M.
This pattern continued for most of the first half and Monifieth were by far the better team. Despite numerous chances the goal looked as though it was not going to come. However there was little to worry about as Cally passed the ball out to Eilidh on the wing and taking one touch to control and the second to whip in a superb cross to be met on the full by Katie M to score her first goal for the club.
There were numerous chances to increase the lead before half time but none were taken.
The second half continued with Katie R Alice and Iona providing a great foundation for the others to attack the Montrose net.
The second came as a corner from Libby was met by their defender Goalie and the onrushing Katie M. Who got the final touch was unclear but the ball ended up in the net.
The third came from an attack on the left this time. Iona played the ball to Jessica who then found Cally who attacked the goal. The ball then broke to Libby who took one step to the right before hitting a superb 20 yard shot into the top right hand corner.
Darcie had little to do in this game but the times that she was called into action, she dealt with any trouble very well.
There was then some confusion in the Monifieth defence as both Iona and Darcie stopped as the ball was clearly over the line. The referee saw it differently though and the Montrose winger crossed the ball for Montrose to get a consolation goal.
The last 10 minutes were a bit nervy from the Monifieth team but they held out well for a well deserved victory.
