Monifieth Reds U13 made the journey up to the fair city of Perth yesterday to take on Jeanfield Girls FC in their first league game in what seems like ages! On an absolutely beautiful day for football the Reds took a wee bit of time to get going but once they did they managed to pressure and stretch their opponents with an eventual 7-1 victory which saw the three points travelling back down the A90.
The game started of with Jeanfield playing some nice football with an emphasis on passing from the keeper, up from defence, through midfield and to the strikers. This form initially proved a challenge for the Reds however Cally Taylor and Sasha Craig both stood firm in the face of some early pressure. AJ Meach yet again proved solid in goal and mopped up any efforts that came her way. The Reds however steadily found their feet and they took the lead when Katie Shaw fired a firm diagonal cross in to the box that was beautifully controlled and then dispatched in to the bottom left corner by Aimee Robertson. A second goal arrived shortly after that when some lovely passing between Liberty Whyte and Aimee Robertson created a clear opportunity for Liberty with which she made no mistake – new boots christened Liberty! By now the Reds were in the ascendancy with their half-time lead of 2-0 only being held to this by the Jeanfield keeper who had made some superb stops from Aimee Robertson, Kacey McCabe and Katie Shaw.
The second half saw the Reds take control of the game. The pressing front play of Aimee Robertson that gave the Jeanfield defence little time to play, the driving play of Liberty Whyte and the presence of Libby Forster in midfield along with all other team members saw the Reds carve open a number of chances however it was Jeanfield who scored the next goal and what it beauty it was. The ball was played down the right hand side of the pitch and fired across goal to be met by a first time strike by their number 23 (Abbie) that AJ Meach got a hand to but couldn’t keep out. A great goal! The Reds quickly responded when great passing between Liberty and Aimee again saw the ball played to Aimee on the edge of the box and she calmly placed it past the keeper and into the net. A similar exchange presented Liberty with a similar opportunity and again she took it to put the Reds 4-1 up. Aimee Robertson was then brought down from behind in the box just as she was about to fire goalwards and the awarded penalty was cooly dispatched by Libby Forster. Libby then drove through the Jeanfield defence to bag her second of the game and the scoring was brought to and end by Katie Shaw who was quickest to react and fire high into the net when the Jeanfield keeper spilled a goal bound drive from Libby Forster.
A welcome league game for the Reds and an even more welcome three points against a very good Jeanfield team.
Thank you to our opponents for making us so welcome and all the very best for the remainder of the season.
