As Monifieth and Montrose were the only teams entered into the DISC tournament today, we played each other in an 80 minute match.
With the players still getting to know each other, it took us 20 minutes or so to find our feet and by that time we were 2-0 down. However, after the initial shaky start, we got into the game and more than matched a strong Montrose side.
The defence looked solid, with Alice, Sasha, Libby and Sarah keeping the Montrose forwards at bay and when they did manage to get past our back four, Louise was in great form. Her save from a one on one in the middle of the first half wouldn’t have looked out of place on Match of the Day.
We started with Catherine, Anna, Steph and Rachel in the midfield and they were having to work hard as the game flowed from end to end. They’ll be happy that we won’t be playing on such big parks when the season starts. We made a few changes in the first half with Elidh, Jessica and Emma coming on to give us fresh legs and keep the momentum going.
We lost a third goal 10 minutes before half time after a couple of unlucky breaks of the ball in the box but our heads didn’t go down and we ended the half the stronger side. We were very unlucky not to score from a well worked corner between our forwards Cally and Katy, with a Montrose defender making a great clearance as the on-rushing Catherine was about to knock the ball in.
A few minutes later and Emma watched on agonizingly as her shot from outside the box scraped the far post.
Half time and 3-0 down but the break had come at just the wrong time for us as we had been encamped in the Montrose half for the last 10 minutes.
Becky came on for the second half as we tried to find a goal that would get us back in the game and it was from one of her passes that Rachel was sent through but she was crowded out by a combination of the Montrose keeper and defenders.
We had a very good claim for a penalty turned down when Anna was brought down in the box but for some reason, the ref didn’t give it. Then Becky’s in-swinging free kick from the left was missed by everyone and flew inches wide.
Catherine and Katy were causing Montrose problems down the wings but the Montrose defence rode their luck on quite a few occasions, managing to clear the ball before we could finish.
As was the case at the end of the first half, most of the play was up in the Montrose half and any time they did manage to break back up the park, our defence was more than a match for them.
We managed to create a few more openings as the match drew to a close but once again, the break of the ball didn’t go our way and we couldn’t find that elusive goal that our play deserved.
Final score 3-0 – a disappointing result but certainly not a disappointing performance. The girls showed great spirit, never let their heads go down and with a bit of luck would have had 2 or 3 goals to show for their efforts. They worked hard, got some more match time under their belts and proved that they can hold their own at this level.
